Here is a little advice that will help you get started on your own decorating adventure...

Red and Orange-

Red is a high energy color. Avoid it in the bedroom. Red and Orange increase the appetite. These colors work for a kitchen or dining room, but you will want to avoid them if you are trying to lose weight.


This color is associated with happiness. Most people think of sunshine and daylight when they see this color. However, it is known to increase anger and frustration.  

Green and Blue-

The most common color in nature. Green is a calming color. They are both great color choices for the bedroom. Darker blues and greens help insomnia and create a spa-like environment. Brighter blues and greens increase productivity which makes them great colors for office space. Olive green has made its way back from the '90s, and midnight blue, once used only in bedrooms, is now singing a new song in living rooms and dens.

Purple and Pink-

The color of luxuriousness and a symbol of royalty. These colors are great for pops of color on pillows and rugs. Also popular colors for little girls rooms.


Brown is a neutral color great for family rooms and spaces where people gather.


White is a clean color that can be used literally in any room, and with any other color. Use it to bring in light. Also, to create a larger, more open, bright space.

Black and Gray-

Black is normally used as an accent color. It overwhelms a space very quickly so a little goes a long way. If you want to paint a wall in this color, I suggest painting half a wall, then lighten it up by adding wainscoting with a lighter color. Black and gray were very popular in 2018 and used in homes all across the world to bring in a new sense of modern style. Homes went from traditional to modern. That design scheme made its way on into 2019 and 2020. We are now seeing it used with bold colors such as deep blues and dark greens. Builders are catching on as well. Gray is the new beige. Black and charcoal are the new white. Using all of these colors together is perfectly acceptable.

Home Staging For Selling Purposes

Keep in mind, you are not decorating the home to attract your family. You are styling the home to attract the public which is a completely different ball game. Buyers don't want to envision your family living there, they want to see themselves living there, which means you need to change the home to allow them room to envision the space as their own. This way they can "feel" at home.

Here are a few pointers on how to prep the home for selling purposes:

-If the home is in great shape, keep it simple. Less is more in most cases. Less makes a room feel spacious and when selling a home, this is what you want. Look at my sample picture here. This kitchen speaks for itself. A lot of home furnishings aren't necessary, although I would add a few things to make it feel warm and inviting rather than empty. Empty is not what you want when selling a house. Add just enough furnishings to make the place feel like home.

-If the house is in need of major updates, this is when you will want to go all out adding cozy and comfortable home furnishings and home decor. You don't want to fill up every inch of the space, but you do want to fill it enough that it takes away from the negative aspects of the space. You're not trying to cover the home's flaws, you're just trying to soften them a bit.  

-Use neutral colors throughout the home. This is not the time to bring in bold colors as they are a turn-off to many buyers. 

-Stage areas of the home that need to soften, and highlight the best features of the home. For example, if you have great countertops you don't want to cover those. You want to remove the clutter and define the space. Add just a few minor details to bring attention to them.

Remove Clutter

-Go ahead and pack up all of your personal items such as family pics, awards your kids may have earned, and the clutter that covers your fridge. Those things are not important to your potential buyers, no matter how important they are to you. A buyer wants to envision themselves in the home and if your personal items are all over the place, it may be hard for them to do that. Some people have a hard time seeing anything that isn't directly in front of them. You want to make it as easy as possible for them to picture themselves moving in. Create a space that says, "Welcome home."

-If your children have a lot of toys and personal items in their rooms, this is a good time to pack up that clutter. It is hard to get kids to keep their things put away, but if they are packed away it won't be a problem for them. Living a minimalist lifestyle is important while your home is on the market if you want to bring in top dollar for your home. 

-Paint or change any outdated home furnishings.

If the item is in rough condition, remove it completely. Outdated furnishings make the home feel outdated as well. Buyers are looking for homes that feel as new as possible. Character is okay, but don't mistake "outdated" for character or charm.

-Don't forget the outside. The front exterior of the home is the most important. Remember, marketing the home begins in the front yard starting with the mailbox. Don't forget to update it as well, or at least clean it and put a fresh coat of paint on it. Don't make the mistake of thinking it will not be noticed. Potential buyers notice EVERYTHING.

-Spruce up your yard with mulch in the flower beds, a few new plants, and trim any trees or shrubbery that hang low. You don't want anything covering the front of the home. Be sure to keep your yard cut and well maintained throughout the time your home is on the market. Homes look abandoned when the yard is overgrown.

-Don't forget to at least clean the back yard. All potential buyers view it when viewing the home. It doesn't have to be as welcoming as the front, but it does need to be presentable.

"Presentable" is a relative word. It means different things to different people. Ask yourself, "Is this the best it can be?" If the answer is yes, you are ready to market the home!
